Need a Redbox? Check out "The Impossible".

The Impossible

Director: Juan Antonio Bayona
Cast: Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor
Rated PG-13 for intense realistic disaster sequences, including disturbing injury images, and brief nudity.

Warning: If you rent this film then prepare to have a box of tissues nearby. This is a movie that went under the radar with all the big holiday releases, but it is one that everyone should see! The Impossible is an emotional powerhouse of a movie that really proves how strong family ties are. It is both terrifying and beautiful. It is easy to go into most films and look to find faults, but this is a story so moving that you find yourself completely riveted.

The Impossible tells the true story of one family that is separated by the terrible tsunami that hit Southeast Asia in 2004 and their struggle to find each other amidst the horrific aftermath. Naomi Watts plays Maria, wife to Henry (Ewan McGregor) and mother to three sons: Lucas, Thomas, and Simon. After the tsunami hits, Maria is able to find her eldest son Lucas despite being viciously injured herself. The two of them watch out for each other, particularly Lucas who must look after his wounded mother. Meanwhile, Henry has also survived with the younger boys, Thomas and Simon. Henry is determined to find his missing wife and his oldest son. In the midst of complete chaos and destruction each of them will discover how important family is to them.

Everything about this movie is done extremely well. The tsunami scenes are shockingly real and can be quite disturbing and intense. Despite its PG-13 rating, there are some gruesome injuries and brief flashes of nudity, though none of it is sexual. It is a difficult film to watch due to its subject matter and the horrors that come from such a natural disaster. Many lives are lost with families separated and children orphaned. Nevertheless, this is a film that I believe all should see. It is a testament to the power of hope and the bonds of a family. Just watch it and you will be moved.

RATING:  A+
