Movie Review: Jake Gyllenhaal Is Mesmerizing And Terrifying In NIGHTCRAWLER.

Nightcrawler

Director: Dan Gilroy
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, and Bill Paxton.
Rated R for violence including graphic images, and for language.

No, this isn't an origin story for the popular X-Men character, Nightcrawler. This is a disturbing and intense thriller that explores the criminal nightlife of Los Angeles with some sharp commentary on the media and capitalism at its worst. The result is nothing short of mesmerizing with Jake Gyllenhaal turning in an Oscar worthy performance.
Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal) is an ambitious young man just trying to find a job in one of the country's most cutthroat cities, L.A. One night Lou happens upon a horrible car accident when he is surprised to see a freelance video crew show up to record the scene to sell to the highest bidding news station that will buy it. Suddenly, Lou sees an opportunity. What follows is Lou's disturbing knack for capturing the most raw footage of horrific crimes, and his determination to do whatever is necessary to get the perfect shot.

Jake Gyllenhaal has really been impressing me in recent years. If you're one of those who can't shake his Prince of Persia and Bubbleboy movies, then you obviously haven't seen his impressive acting chops in acclaimed films such as Zodiac, Prisoners, and Enemy. The Oscar race for Best Actor is proving to be quite full this year, but I'll be shocked if Gyllenhaal does not get a nomination. He is creepy as hell, yet you are transfixed for every minute.

The film is written and directed by Dan Gilroy whose older brother is Tony Gilroy, most known for writing the Bourne films. Dan turns in a unique and fascinating script with Nightcrawler. He's a name you're going to have to pay attention to with such an impressive film as this. His direction was fairly strong, though there were some instances where I felt it could have been stronger for a larger impact. That being said, Nightcrawler is one hell of a directorial debut.

The movie is not for everyone. It is a dark movie that explores some seedy characters in horrifying situations. However, if you appreciate a uniquely intense thriller with a fine performance from a great actor, then Nightcrawler just may be worth your while.

RATING: A-
